ELISABETH CAMPBELL

About being blind

Song 1
Song 2

Elisabeth Campbell (87) was born in St Anns, Jamaica, and came to England for medical reasons in 1983. Back in Jamaica she used to work on a farm with her brother, selling goats and pigs.

Dating

I used to go out on Friday nights and dance with partners. The boys used to say 'Momma, what happening?', but it never worked on me; they were afraid of me. I don't chat up boys.

Fun and Games

I used to play dominoes in mixed teams. We played against other parishes and would get a goat as the prize. We also played volleyball.

The War

In 1942 we can't get flour or coconut oil, and I had to walk four miles to buy yam. It was always dark because of the blackout.

Food

Every food you can find is in St Anns garden parish; any food you can name: Rum Bawn coconut, yellow yam, manish water… Me me nar eat any and any food - English food not good!

Youth

I was a good girl at school you can't do nothing wrong and tell your mama, that make more trouble The younger generation don't know their history, and they're not interested in God. No wonder their life is messed up.

Natural Remedies

For headaches use Nut leaf oil. Tie it on your forehead till dry then take it off.

'You have to live good to be happy, it comes from within.'
